Description
GStreamer has had a Media Source Extensions (MSE) implementation for 3 years now but has seen basically no adoption. For a project we recently needed an API that allowed more control than just "play this file", and ideally would be able to share one implementation of a custom streaming protocol across platforms: iOS and tvOS, Android, and the web. MSE appeared as an ideal candidate for this.
The existing implementation, extracted from WebKitGTK, turned out to have many shortcomings. We ended up writing a new implementation from scratch, added React Native bindings on top, and used it to build applications for all these platforms while using the same media processing code in all of them.
This lightning talk will introduce the new implementation, how it differs from the existing one, the current status and future upstreaming plans. At this point the new implementation should be a good choice for projects that have similar requirements, and we hope that it can also be used as a basis for an MSE implementation in the browser engine Servo in the future.
