DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Adam Blonsky ()\nAbstract:\n\nOffshore crane operati
ons have traditionally required operators to work directly on platform cab
ins in hazardous environments—involving complex offshore logistics\, hig
h infrastructure costs\, and extended periods away from home. Palfinger\,
in partnership with Aker BP\, is transitioning these operations from physi
cal cabins to onshore Integrated Operations Centers.\n\nWhile remote teleo
peration solves logistics and safety challenges\, it introduces strict tec
hnical requirements: operators lose direct physical sensation and must rel
y entirely on visual feedback. Safe control demands real-time feedback (<2
00ms)\, continuous multi-angle situational awareness\, sensor feedback (wi
 nd speed\, hook height\, load weight\, and active alarms)\, and absolute s
ystem reliability.\n\nTo meet these demands\, Palfinger has built a high-p
erformance visual system centered around a GStreamer processing engine. GS
 treamer handles multi-camera ingestion\, hardware-accelerated video decodi
ng\, and composition across multi-monitor desks and videowalls. By integra
ting a dynamic layout engine\, operators can hot-swap visual perspectives
on the fly—switching between detailed inspection views and wide-angle op
erational grids seamlessly. Furthermore\, native overlay blending pairs li
ve video frames with crane sensor telemetry\, while embedded pipeline prob
es continuously monitor latency\, frame delivery\, and automated backup fa
ilovers.\n\nThis talk will explore this system and its use of GStreamer\,
as well as the difficulties faced in building it. I will demonstrate how c
 ombining high-throughput video compositing\, real-time telemetry integrati
on\, and proactive stream monitoring allows operators seated miles from th
eir crane to control heavy offshore machinery with confidence and precisio
n\, as if they were sitting in the cabin.\n\nTakeaways:\n\n - Sub-200ms en
d-to-end performance is achievable using GStreamer.\n - How to composite m
ulti-camera video streams together with live sensor telemetry.\n - Leverag
ing GStreamer telemetry and stream probes to track pipeline health\, monit
or rendering latency\, and trigger seamless backup failovers.\n\nhttps://i
